On 13th March 2019, Hilary Mutyambai was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the new Inspector General of Police.
His appointment will depend on his parliamentary approval. The ex police boss Joseph Boinnet was appointed to serve as the CAS in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife.

Facts about new police boss
- Mutyambai is the current deputy director of National Counter-Terrorism Centre
- During the 2019 Terror attack on 14 Riverside Complex, he was a key centre of tactics that saw all the terror attackers neutralized by Kenyan forces.
- Until his appointment he was serving as a chief spy in National Intelligence Service (NIS)
- He became a police in 1991 after a successful recruitment exercise that favoured his abilities and capacity to execute duties and responsibilities that were later tasked to his head and command
- He got an undergraduate degree from University of Nairobi and a Master’s degree from the Australian National University- the same school where Mr Boinnet acquired his Master’s degree
- Previously he served as Regional Intelligence Coordinator in Nairobi and Mombasa and later ordered to serve the whole of coastal regions
- He also boosts of having trained in special skills such as advanced security analysis, detection and prevention of frauds and forgery, policing, intelligence and counter terrorism
