A Sunday afternoon boat accident in Western Uganda, has left more than 30 feared dead when a boat ferrying footballers and fans capsized in Lake Albert.

Uganda Police divers and local fishermen search for victims of a boat disaster on Lake Albert near Kitebere on March 23, 2013. As many as 60 people are feared to have drowned when a boat capsized on Lake Albert on the border between Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo, reports said on March 22. Uganda’s Daily Monitor newspaper said the boat, travelling between two districts in western Uganda, capsized shortly before midday Saturday. “We have also recovered 19 bodies but we expect more bodies,” local official Oscar Chunyai was quoted as saying. He added that dozens more people had been rescued by fisherman who saw the accident. The boat was reportedly carrying 100 people, many of them refugees from the DRC, The New Vision newspaper said, adding that 15 bodies of children had also been recovered. The number rescued so far pointed to a potential death toll of anywhere between up to 50 or 60 dead, Ugandan media reports said. AFP PHOTO/Michele Sibiloni

The victims were cross the lake from  Fofo in Hoima district to neighbouring Runga to play friendly matches for men and women when the engine-powered boat capsized.

According to Sadic Nyangireki, the Nyakabingo parish youth chairman and a businessman at Fofo , the tragedy may have been casued by a strong wind which passed over the engine boat that might have been over its carrying capacity.

“The boat capsized about 300 metres after taking off from the landing site,” said Mr Nyangireki.

“The coxswain attempted to return to the landing site when the winds started blowing but the boat capsized,” he said

One of the survivors, who was among the 25 rescued, told local papers that the boat had a hole that was letting in water.

In 2016, 40 footballer and fans died when their boat capsized on the Christmas Day as they were on their way to a football event
