A Sunday afternoon boat accident in Western Uganda, has left more than 30 feared dead when a boat ferrying footballers and fans capsized in Lake Albert.
The victims were cross the lake from Fofo in Hoima district to neighbouring Runga to play friendly matches for men and women when the engine-powered boat capsized.
According to Sadic Nyangireki, the Nyakabingo parish youth chairman and a businessman at Fofo , the tragedy may have been casued by a strong wind which passed over the engine boat that might have been over its carrying capacity.
“The boat capsized about 300 metres after taking off from the landing site,” said Mr Nyangireki.
“The coxswain attempted to return to the landing site when the winds started blowing but the boat capsized,” he said
One of the survivors, who was among the 25 rescued, told local papers that the boat had a hole that was letting in water.
