Have you ever wondered why every employer wants to hire someone with years of work experience? Truly, no one wants to take risks. Regardless of your degree, it is not worth hiring a person without practical skills. Many firms do not have time to experiment on you. Their resources…too precious. However, for some, incubation programs help to assimilate fresh graduates. With this entrenched culture among organizations, graduates must do things differently to convince HR managers. Persuade the hiring officer that you are a competent fresh graduate and land your dream job before long. Here are tips to give you work experience before joining the job market.

Work Experience

Apply for jobs while studying

Who said students cannot work? Do not watch opportunities pass by because you are still a student. Give it a shot. Target jobs you can comfortably handle alongside your studies. Do not be too money-minded to sacrifice your academics.

Apply for internships

Do you really need an internship? Yes! Go for as many internships as possible before you graduate. Though most institutions make it mandatory to go for at least a single internship, break the norm. Start applying for internships while in first year. This will help you have your feet firm in the industry. Remember to ask for a recommendation letter every time you are through with internship.

Apply for work-study programs

Most colleges and universities have work-study programs. This helps in placement of interested students in various departments. Such programs are so flexible that do not conflict with your schedule. Do not care what your colleagues say about you as you serve them at the accounts office. You are getting work experience. Sooner than later, they will be wondering how to get hands-on experience after graduation.

Apply for volunteer jobs

As a student, do not focus on salaried opportunities. Be ready to render your services, get work experience and commendation without pay. This can be tricky. How do you work free when you have an endless list of needs? Do it! You won’t volunteer forever. You never know. The company may just hire you for showing interest without a coin. Even if such a chance does not come, don’t despair; you’ve got work experience.

Liaise with Career office

Get in touch with your career master. This can be an excellent starting point. It is important because many organizations link with colleges to offer recruitment opportunities to students. Get the right information at the right time.

Talk about your experience

You already have work experience through internships, contract jobs, volunteering, etc. Do not shy off. Once you graduate, make it your trademark. Prove to hiring panels that you have the experience they are looking for. HR managers are not looking for any different work experience than this.
