Nation Media Group located at Nation Centre, along Kimathi Street.
The building is along one of the most prolific streets in Nairobi, dominated by Matatus which ply to different areas in Nairobi and even outside the region.
This put a great risk pedestrians who ply the route, including Nation Media Group journalists who have a behive of activities around the same area.
Here are a list of journalists who died from Matatu related accidents while in line of duty
Ken Walibora
On 10th April , 2020 he was knocked down by a speeding matatu while he was on his daily duties at work. The accident had happened few metres from his work station at Nation Centre.
He went missing before his body was found at Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary.
Nairobi area police commander Mr Philip Ndolo confirmed to the Nation that the driver of the said matatu had on Friday recorded a statement with the police after the accident happened at around 9 am.
He had been rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital by well wishers before he succumbed to his injuries
Raphael Nzioka
He was hit by a speeding reckless matatu driver while he was crossing the junction of Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street.
It is here that Ken Walibora also was hit by a different matatu.
The Matatu’s was registered as KAR 516X under the 2KR Sacco which operates between Kikuyu and Nairobi route
According to witnesses, the driver hit Mr Nzioki at night then sped off, leaving his lifeless body lying in the middle of the road.
The incident happened on 7th March 2020.
The body was later taken to the City Mortuary.
He served as a news producer at NTV
Christine Omulando
The 46 year old Christine who worked as a sub-editor at The EastAfrican weekly regional died on March 16 in 2020.
She left for her usual afternoon lunch and never to be seen again live.
Police said a matatu veered off the road and hit pedestrians including her moments before a minibus ran over her body. She died on the spot.
The accident happened again few metres from Nation Centre, at Khoja Mosque.
Her lifeless body was taken to City mortuary while the other two women who got injuries were taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Ms. Omulando had worked at People Daily and the defunct Kenya Times newspapers, before joining the Nation Media Group where she worked for over a decade.
