The Hai Phong International Hospital, Vietnam, released the image of a newborn baby holding the intrauterine device (IUD) in one hand that was ejected with him by his mother, who allegedly must have functioned as a contraceptive.
The photo was recently shared through the Facebook page of the establishment where the family was treated.
The delivery obstetrician, identified as Tran Viet Phuong, admitted that the IUD only came out when the baby was already born. “After receiving it, I thought making her hold the device would be interesting, so I took a photo. I never thought it would receive so much attention,” the doctor told local doctors quoted by the Daily Star.
Meanwhile, the hospital described the event as a “miracle”, assuring that the minor “broke the method of family planning” to join humanity.
According to the World Health Organization, intrauterine devices are among the best contraceptive methods, with more than 99% effectiveness.
The 34-year-old mother had apparently had the IUD inserted two years ago. To explain what happened, Phuong suggests that the device may have moved from its original position, allowing pregnancy. However, and preventively, both the woman and the child remained under medical observation.
