Otile Brown’s Message of Sympathy

Otile Brown, a celebrated musician, took to Instagram to send a message of comfort and solidarity to those affected by the tragedy. Writing in Swahili, he said:

“Ndugu zetu wa Tanzania, poleni sana kwa majanga yaliowakuta Kariakoo. Rambirambi zangu kwa waathirika na familia zao, Mungu awatangulie na awape nguvu kwenye wakati huu mgumu.”

(Translation: “Our brothers and sisters in Tanzania, we are deeply sorry for the tragedy that has befallen you in Kariakoo. My condolences to the victims and their families; may God be with you and grant you strength during this difficult time.”)

Government’s Response to the Tragedy

President Samia Suluhu Hassan assured citizens that the government would support the victims and their families. She announced that the government would cover medical expenses for the injured and handle burial costs for the deceased.

Additionally, she revealed plans for a thorough inspection of buildings in the Kariakoo area to prevent similar incidents in the future. Investigations into the cause of the collapse have indicated that the upper floors of the building were being used as storage spaces, which likely exceeded the structural load capacity.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila clarified that the fatalities were primarily caused by injuries from falling debris, steel rods, and being crushed under the rubble.

Harrowing Scenes from Kariakoo

A chilling video shared on social media captured the desperation of those trapped under the debris. In the video, a man can be seen struggling to breathe as others trapped alongside him called out for help. Rescuers have been working tirelessly to retrieve survivors and recover the remains of those who perished.

A Call for Vigilance

This tragedy has sparked a conversation about building safety standards in Tanzania. Officials and citizens alike are urging for stricter regulations and regular inspections to ensure such disasters do not recur.

Otile Brown’s message of unity and compassion reflects the deep bond shared by East African nations. As Tanzanians mourn their loss, messages of support like his serve as a reminder of the strength found in solidarity during difficult times.

The Kariakoo tragedy is a solemn call for vigilance and community action to safeguard lives and prevent similar catastrophes in the future.
