Skating champion Kevin Kiarie Ruhiu has turned a near career setback into one of the most inspiring sporting success stories of 2026 after winning two gold medals for Kenya at the African Skating Championships in Cairo, Egypt. His journey to the podium was not smooth, as he revealed that administrative and financial challenges almost stopped him from competing altogether. The issue stemmed from his federation’s failure to settle the annual affiliation fee required for international participation. Despite arriving ready to represent Kenya, he learned that his eligibility was at risk just days before competition. The situation forced him to seek urgent financial help to avoid disqualification and secure his place in the event.

According to Kiarie, the challenge emerged when he was informed in Cairo that the national federation had not paid its 2026 affiliation fee to World Skate. This payment is required to allow athletes to compete in official international events under the governing body’s rules. Without it, participation would have been impossible and his training efforts would have gone to waste. The news placed him under immediate pressure, especially as the competition was already underway. He had to act quickly to avoid missing one of the biggest events of his skating career. Within hours, he reached out for help as he tried to secure the funds needed to resolve the issue.

Support came from a close friend, Jere, who stepped in at a critical moment. Kiarie explained that Jere raised and sent KSh 38,000 within 12 hours to help address the problem. The money played a key role in ensuring he could proceed with the competition process without interruption. He later shared that this support came after a long history of encouragement and belief from his friend during difficult times. He credited Jere for consistently standing by him through challenges in his skating journey. The quick response helped relieve pressure and allowed him to focus on competing instead of being sidelined by administrative issues.

Despite the uncertainty, Kiarie received clarification from officials at World Skate Africa that he could still participate. He was advised that as long as the outstanding fees were settled before departure, he would remain eligible. This decision allowed him to continue competing while the financial matter was being resolved. He confirmed that he proceeded with his events without disruption and completed his races successfully. The resolution ensured that Kenya still had representation at the championship despite the earlier complications. It also highlighted how quickly administrative issues can affect athletes at international level.

Kiarie went on to deliver a standout performance, winning two gold medals for Kenya at the championships. His achievement placed him among the top performers of the tournament and drew national attention. The victory was later acknowledged at the highest level when President William Ruto publicly congratulated him for his success. The President described his journey as inspirational and praised his determination to overcome obstacles. He also encouraged the athlete to continue pushing forward and representing Kenya on the global stage. The recognition added national pride to an already remarkable personal achievement.

Beyond the medals and recognition, Kiarie emphasized the emotional and personal weight of the experience. He reflected on how support systems, especially from close friends, played a central role in his journey. He explained that he had often involved Jere in many challenges throughout his skating career and had never been let down. That trust and loyalty became a defining part of his story at the championships. The experience also highlighted the financial and structural struggles that many athletes face behind the scenes. For Kiarie, the victory represented not only sporting excellence but also resilience in the face of uncertainty.

Kevin Kiarie Ruhiu’s success in Cairo stands as a powerful reminder of determination, support, and perseverance in sport. His ability to overcome last-minute financial obstacles and still deliver top-level performance reflects strong mental focus and commitment. The double gold medal achievement strengthens Kenya’s presence in African skating and adds momentum to the sport’s growth in the country. His story also highlights the importance of proper administrative support for athletes competing internationally. As he continues his career, his experience in 2026 will remain a defining moment that shaped both his journey and his reputation as a champion.
