Nairobi governor Mike Sonko took to social media to share new proposed Gikomba look month after the largest East African open air market was partly raised down by an inferno.
Sonko’s Gikomba new look from the photos shared , will have a five-storey high-rise mall standing tall with atleast 525 stalls. The project is intended to be done between the county and national government.
The modernized market unveiled in its prototype would have cold room for 25 fish mongers and 76 clothes stalls on its first floor.
“Plans are underway for the construction of a modern Gikomba market in conjunction with the National Government,” Sonko wrote.
Quick thinking Kenyans were ready to critisize Sonko, and even went ahead to school him where necessary. Below are 5 points Sonko should note down if his plans are anything serious to go by.
1.Grammar checker- Propsed to Proposed
Nothing beats selecting clothes/vegetables from open air.Who will afford rent for concrete?Gikomba serves 90% poor and struggling of this country. That proposed structure will become a mall.Try user friendly plans.Spellcheck 'Propsed'

2.Gikomba needs fire outbreak management plans, is the mall fireproof?
What happens to the existing parcel of land that gikosh currently sits on? Is there a private developer eyeing that land? Are you telling us that that proposed mall is fire proof? What's the budget? Proposed rent? That project raises more questions than answers

3.What are the plans to settle the small scale traders as the mall will take ‘years’ to stand
Before cartels disagree to agree on the kick backs time will already have lapsed…. where on earth this traders will be surviving on……do you want to tell us that people working in gikomba will temporarily cease to eat, have shelter, take their children to school

4.Is the mall coming for the small traders or going to cartels now?
Are the shops going cost the traders more, less or the same? Because if its more then the current traders will be left disenfranchised.

5.Are there cartels planning rob the land Gikomba sits on?
What happens to the existing parcel of land that gikosh currently sits on? Is there a private developer eyeing that land? Are you telling us that that proposed mall is fire proof? What's the budget? Proposed rent? That project raises more questions than answers
