The love between Jacque Maribe and Joseph Irungu has opened a silent debate among Kenyan couples on what to do if your other half is arrested as a main suspect over murder crimes.

Here are 10 things you should if you suspect your boyfriend or girlfriend has been involved in a MURDER crime.

  1. The first step is to report the matter to the nearest police station, obtain an OB statement and wait for further instructions from police officers.
  2. Do not help your partner in doctoring or giving false witness, this would lead to police treating you as another suspect, tell the truth and you shall be set free.
  3. Also do not help your partner in destroying evidence such as burning clothes of the victims, or giving away any assistance to abort the crime from police investigation, if you do so police will treat you as a suspect and charge you with an attempt to procure or abet a murder as well as aiding a crime activity
  4. You also need to ask for security from police, so that if police treat you as a main witness, murder accomplices or even your lover may harm or kill you in attempt to hide evidence
  5. Inform your close friends and relatives over the matter, they would serve as your witnesses if police decide to charge you with murder. They will help in proving you were not at the scene of the murder. If possible contact your lawyer and keep in touch with him/her
  6. Vacate your premises, do not touch on anything the suspect has used, if he or she had your phone report it to the police too. Touching on items he had used puts you in the murder case when police come for forensic details such as finger prints
  7. Reporting you missing phone will also serve a good reason so as the crime does not show up on you. Your phone may have been used without your knowledge to commit a murder crime
  8. Do not head to your work, school or attend to your normal daily duties, you need to remain vigilant and deal with the matter until it is dusted- attending your daily duties will embarrass you when police arrest you before your bosses and workmates
  9. Talk to other people in your house such as relatives, house helps and watchmen, tell them what is happening, and let them be ready to tell the truth is police come calling for them. These are the ones to set you free in future.
  10. Do not change anything on your body, no shower, shaving, or any make-up or even changing clothes. Anything you do to alter evidence could backfire on your side.
  11. Last but not least, if you are not part of the crime, watch out the details above and any other not mentioned, tell the truth and you will be set free by the court.
