Celebrated former Kenya Rugby Sevens captain Humphrey Kayange was born in July 1982 in Eldoret. Kayange is well known by rugby aficionados for his unassailable speed in the national team and his exemplary performance. The brother to Collins Injera, Kenyan top scorer is a source of pride. If you thought you knew Kayange, then you are wrong. Here are some of the things you should note about the rugby 7s player.

Kayange

  1. Kayange joins National Team-2005

He joined the Kenya National Sevens team in 2005 and immediately got a chance to play. He took part in a lobby for rugby family during the 121st session of 2009 International Olympics Committee that was held in Copenhagen.

  1. He studied Organic Chemistry

Who said rugby players are just muscular but dwarfed upstairs? Despite bullying opponents in red outfits, the Kenya 7s skipper also wears a white lab coat for the research. He is currently working on new antibiotics that aim at upgrading the content and ingredient of antibiotics at a British university, which started in 2012.

  1. Rugby is genetic

He is the elder brother to Mwamba RFC player Collins Injera. Their young brother Michael Agevi also features in the Kenya Rugby 7s team.

  1. Order of golden warrior

Kayange has been seriously feted before. Together with his brother Injera, he was awarded the Presidential Order of Golden Warrior in 2010 for the 2008/2009 IRB World Series.

  1. Kayange the Footballer

Growing up in Eldoret the only sporting personnel he would see were the long distance runners. This is because Eldoret is home of Kenya’s respected athletes. Kayange had to switch from sprinting to football than later to rugby.

  1. Anti-doping ambassador

Bonding chemistry with Rugby, Kayange has since 2010 set a pace in making the world safer after he was named IRB Sevens anti-doping ambassador. He also takes part in “Keep Rugby Clean” campaign.

  1. Samurai Wakulima manager

Kayange is the team manager of the Samurai Wakulima. The team combines rugby heroes from former and current Kenyan teams and participates in local rugby tournament.

  1. Kakamega high School Alumnus

Kayange is a proud product of Kakamega high in Western Kenya. While at Katch in the 90s, the school mentored him to become a rugby star. He is not the only one from Kakamega government school. The School is known to have produced several rugby champions including Dennis Mwanja, Oscar Osir, and Allan Makaka. Kayange first played while in school at age of 17.

  1. Bristol University Graduate

Through a scholarship, Kenya’s rugby sensation got a chance to pursue a degree in chemistry at the Bristol University.

  1. Kayange abandoned after injury

Kayange sustained an injury during the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow. KRFU and the Kenya Olympic Committee recklessly left the star to undergo surgery at Kijabe hospital as they engaged in a blame game over whom to clear the bill.
