President Donald Trump has been sent to political trial today by the House of Representatives, where most lawmakers were in favor of the process, according to a count by The Associated Press. Trump accused the Democrats of waging an “open war against democracy,” in a letter in a wrathful tone.
The president of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has practically secured the votes ahead of today’s debate on two charges of political trial that accuse Trump of abuse of authority and obstruction of Congress. The first charge for abuse of authority now has the endorsement of the majority in the Lower House.
No Republican has indicated his support for the political trial, preparing the ground for a partisan vote in favor of the Democrats. One by one, the centrist Democrats, including several rookies who risk re-election in districts in which the president enjoys great popularity, announced this week that they would support the charges of political trial.
In his letter, addressed to Pelosi, Trump called the charges against “deceptive,” “without values” and “absurd,” accused her of “undermining democracy” and warned her that “history will judge her harshly.”
For the president, the vote in the lower house is “nothing more than an attempt at an illegal and partisan coup d’etat” and declared himself a victim of a “vicious crusade” from which, he said, will be successful. Thousands of people demonstrated last night in Times Square to request the removal of the president.
Pelosi responded with his own letter, saying that the facts show that Trump abused his power and that “in the US nobody is above the law … I salute the moral courage of our Democrats to defend our democracy in favor of the people” .
