Comedian and former Gukena FM radio presenter Auntie Jemimah, born Wangari Nguri, has built a reputation for turning everyday moments into laughter. Fans know her as the hilarious voice of relatable experiences, but behind the humour lies a story of strict discipline, teenage rebellion, and substance abuse that almost derailed her life.
In a recent interview on the Iko Nini podcast, she revealed how early experiences at school shaped her path. She recalled being suspended for refusing to participate in school games, only to return and face additional punishment for alleged misdeeds she did not commit. Her daily routine included manual labor, from digging compost pits to washing kitchens serving hundreds of students. These experiences left her feeling unsafe and alienated, prompting her parents to transfer her to a new school in Kangemi.
It was at this new school that Auntie Jemimah first experimented with substances. She started with marijuana and eventually moved on to prescription drugs, including Mandrax. She described the addiction as intense, with withdrawal symptoms causing hallucinations and physical discomfort. Despite the growing dependency, she concealed her substance use from school authorities, aware that discovery could worsen her situation.
The addiction affected her social life and mental health. She became isolated, neglected personal hygiene, and struggled with hallucinations. Auntie Jemimah credits her parents’ intervention and professional help for turning her life around. Rehabilitation involved detoxification, therapy, and counselling, helping her confront the trauma from her early years and learn coping mechanisms. She eventually returned to school, excelled academically, and remained free from drugs, occasionally consuming alcohol in moderation.
Her recovery inspired a commitment to advocacy. Auntie Jemimah now speaks to young people in schools and churches about the dangers of substance abuse. She uses her experiences to guide others while transforming her own pain into comedy. Through her work, she demonstrates resilience and awareness, showing how challenges can be confronted and transformed into purpose.
