Celebrity city tailor Bolo Bespoke has drawn attention in Kenya following his comments after attending the burial of former prime minister Raila Odinga. The designer attended the ceremony, stood beside President William Ruto at the gravesite, and later shared a photo marking the moment.
Raila Odinga was laid to rest on October 19 at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, after a state funeral at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University and several public memorials. The ceremony was attended by top dignitaries, including former president Uhuru Kenyatta and Nigeria’s Olusegun Obasanjo. Bolo Bespoke and President Ruto participated in the symbolic act of throwing soil into the grave.
Following the event, Bolo posted on social media: “Thank you, William Samoei Ruto, for standing side by side with me during this historic moment in our nation, as we lay to rest Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga in peace.”
His remarks during a press conference on October 29, alongside musician Prince Indah, sparked debate. When asked about the significance of standing next to Ruto, Bolo stated, “It is not that easy. The bottom line is that I am the new Luo kingpin.” He added a tribute to Raila, calling him a Pan-African and “the father of democracy” whose work enabled the freedoms Kenyans enjoy today.
Critics argued that his focus on personal status overshadowed the solemnity of the occasion. Others warned about the importance of emotional intelligence and sincerity during sensitive national events.
Bolo Bespoke’s statements have stirred wider conversations on public behavior, celebrity influence, and respect for national figures. While he acknowledged Raila’s legacy, many Kenyans remain critical of his framing of the moment and self-promotion.
