Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has responded to criticism from blogger Maverick Aoko regarding his 2022 encounter with billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates. The online exchange reignited debates over Mwangi’s role in advocacy and governance.

The Criticism

The controversy began when Aoko revisited 2022 photos of Mwangi and Gates taken at a TED event in Vancouver. Aoko questioned Mwangi’s impact in addressing poor governance, alleging that his achievements lacked genuine substance.

The critique followed earlier comments by Francis Gaitho, who accused Mwangi of offering a “lightweight explanation” for his meeting with Gates. Gaitho’s post read:
“Poking holes into traitor Boniface Mwangi’s lightweight explanation on the chance encounter with Bill Gates. Watu sio wajinga buana.”

Mwangi’s Response

Mwangi dismissed the criticism, labeling it as baseless and motivated by bitterness. Without directly naming Aoko or Gaitho, he addressed his critics collectively in a social media post:
“I hear this Bill Gates’s photos from 2022 are giving people sleepless nights. I’m a senior TED fellow, and in 2022, I was in TED Vancouver, where Gates had an exhibition. Love your child so that they don’t end up tweeting hate daily out of bitterness.”

Social Media Reactions

Mwangi’s response sparked mixed reactions online. Some users rallied behind him, while others expressed lingering skepticism:

  • @Dr_F_Francis: “Ignore, look forward, let the dogs bark.”
  • @EvangelineWany1: “There are things that the Gates Foundation has done well and there are those that they got wrong. Just give constructive feedback.”
  • @DeeKMak: “Ignore that guy. He hates everybody. Let us focus.”

A History of Clashes

This is not the first time Mwangi and Aoko have clashed publicly. Both are known for their outspoken views on governance and societal issues, making them frequent targets for criticism and debate.

Maverick Aoko’s Recent Absence

Aoko’s critique comes after a period of public silence that sparked speculation. Her absence followed a controversial post involving a prominent leader, which drew reactions from followers and notable figures, including Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo.

While the clash has reignited old debates, Mwangi remains steadfast in defending his reputation and achievements. His retort serves as a reminder of the scrutiny public figures face and the diverse opinions their actions evoke.
