Chelsea have saved the best for last, closing Transfer Deadline Day in absolutely spectacular fashion. Welcome home, David Luiz!
The now 29-year-old David Luiz left Chelsea for Paris Saint-Germain in 2014 after making massive contributions to the Blues’ Champions League and FA Cup wins in 2012, as well as our successful campaign in the Europa League in the following year. At the time, David said that “his cycle” at Chelsea had ended and he was ready for a new challenge. What he failed to emphasize at the time was said cycle was circular.
The rumoured transfer fee is somewhere between £30 million to £40 million, probably closer to the upper end. This is a very similar price to what PSG paid two years ago — widely reported to be £50m, it was probably closer to £37m.
Since leaving England for France, Luiz has kept true to his past reputation: an amazing player with the ball at his feet, but still prone to the odd high-profile defensive mistake. He hasn’t been a part of the Brazilian national team since March, losing the spot to his younger club teammate Marquinhos, but there’s still a chance for him to represent Brazil at the next World Cup if things work out at the Bridge.
Welcome back, Geezer!
