Kenyan musician Marya, known for her hit song Chokoza, has reached out to Kenyans for financial assistance after being hospitalised for the second time this year. The singer revealed that she has been struggling to cope with her health challenges, which have left her unable to work and care for her family.
Marya shared her ordeal in a series of Instagram Stories, explaining that she had recently collapsed at home while holding her youngest child. The baby fell from her arms, and in trying to catch the child, Marya also fell. Fortunately, her househelp was present and quickly called one of her cousins, who rushed her to the hospital. It was during this visit that Marya realised she had suffered a stroke.
The stroke resulted in paralysis on one side of her body, but Marya remained hopeful about regaining movement. Despite her optimism, she disclosed that her hospitalisation had become a financial burden. “It has taken me sooo much to type this. A few days ago I collapsed. Now I’m stuck in hospital. My Lord, where is my sunshine,” she wrote in one of her posts.
She further explained that she had undergone several tests, and while her doctor advised that she could go home, she could not due to pending hospital bills. Marya expressed her struggle in another post: “Last week I had a few episodes of collapsing after getting a stroke this year so I was rushed to hospital. Now after a few tests, the doctor said I can go home, but I can’t due to my pending bills.”
Through her social media updates, Marya also showed that she remains confined to a hospital bed, with one side of her body still paralysed. She appealed to her followers and the Kenyan public for financial support, highlighting the challenges faced by artists when serious health issues strike.
Marya’s story has drawn attention to the vulnerability of musicians and creatives in the country, especially when unexpected medical emergencies occur, and has sparked conversations about the need for community support for struggling artistes.
