Kenyan content creator and comedian Eddie Butita has spoken out about the significant income disparity between American and Kenyan YouTubers. The SPM Buzz founder explained that the difference is largely driven by higher advertising rates in Western countries, which allows creators in the US to earn much more from the same number of views. He also addressed claims that American streamer IShowSpeed was paid by the Kenyan government, dismissing the rumours.
In an interview with radio host Alex Mwakideu, Butita revealed that one million YouTube views from the United States can earn a creator up to KSh 800,000, while the same number of views from Kenya generates only about KSh 150,000 at best. He emphasised that this gap exists because advertisers in the US pay higher rates, which directly affects YouTube monetisation. African content creators often face lower earnings despite strong engagement, leaving many undercompensated for their work compared to their Western counterparts.
Butita also addressed circulating reports regarding IShowSpeed’s recent visit to Kenya. Some online users claimed the American streaming sensation received payment from the government to promote tourism and culture. Butita clarified that the claims were false, noting that IShowSpeed declined any payment. “Do you know IShowSpeed wasn’t paid anything by the Kenyan government? They asked him to give his quote, and he declined, saying he would promote Africa. He said he makes enough money from the stream,” he explained.
Adding a humorous touch, Butita reflected on how he would have handled the offer differently. “Do you think I can do that? I would demand money,” he joked, drawing laughter from his audience. His remarks highlight both the financial realities of content creation in Africa and the dedication of creators like IShowSpeed who promote culture without financial incentive.
