Celebrated Kenyan gospel singer Emmy Kosgei has shared the inspiring story behind her journey to becoming one of the country’s most recognized Kalenjin gospel artists. Speaking during an interview on Stories of Hope by Lady Emily Korir OAM, Emmy revealed that her path into music began long before she recorded her first song. She explained that people first noticed her because of her striking dark complexion and distinctive voice, qualities that would later shape her successful career. What started as a chance encounter eventually developed into a life-changing opportunity, thanks to the encouragement and guidance of fellow gospel musician Esther Wahome. Emmy’s story has resonated with many fans because it highlights the importance of mentorship, believing in one’s abilities and embracing opportunities that may initially seem uncertain.

Before entering the music industry, Emmy Kosgei’s journey was closely linked to modeling. She recalled being introduced to a modeling agency after someone recognized her unique appearance and believed she had potential. During that period, her focus was not on becoming a recording artist but rather on exploring opportunities in front of the camera. It was while pursuing modeling that she crossed paths with Esther Wahome, a meeting that would ultimately change the direction of her life. Looking back, Emmy described the encounter as one of the defining moments that opened the door to a career she had never imagined for herself.

According to Emmy, Esther Wahome immediately recognized something special in her. She openly admired Emmy’s beautiful dark complexion, her appearance and, most importantly, the quality of her voice. Emmy recalled Esther enthusiastically asking where she had been all along, expressing excitement about the talent she believed had been overlooked. Esther introduced her to the proprietor of a modeling company, where Emmy initially found herself supporting other performers rather than taking center stage. While Emmy accepted the background role, Esther believed she was destined for much more and was determined to help her realize her full potential.

The turning point came when Esther encouraged Emmy to stop thinking of herself as a backing vocalist and begin pursuing a career as a lead gospel singer. Emmy remembered Esther telling her that she possessed a remarkable voice and should focus on creating meaningful music instead of remaining behind other artists. Those words planted the seed for what would become one of Kenya’s most successful gospel music careers. Esther did not simply offer compliments. She challenged Emmy to believe in herself and to use the gifts she had been given to make a lasting impact through music.

Despite Esther’s confidence in her abilities, Emmy admitted that she was initially reluctant to follow the advice. One of her biggest concerns was the idea of recording music in Kalenjin, her mother tongue. At the time, she questioned who her audience would be and whether there was room for such music in Kenya’s gospel industry. She also worried about the social climate, explaining that tribal tensions made her hesitant to focus on music in a local language when many artists were recording in Swahili or English. Those fears made it difficult for her to see the opportunity that Esther could already envision.

Esther Wahome, however, remained convinced that Emmy’s uniqueness would become her greatest strength. She encouraged her not to follow the same path as everyone else but instead to fill a gap that existed in the gospel music industry. Esther pointed out that while many artists were already producing songs in Swahili and English, very few were creating quality gospel music in Kalenjin. She believed Emmy had both the voice and the presence to connect with audiences in a powerful way. Her advice proved to be both practical and visionary, encouraging Emmy to embrace her identity instead of hiding it.

Esther’s support extended far beyond words of encouragement. Emmy revealed that her mentor helped organize professional resources, including a producer and a camera crew, to ensure that her music career started on the right foundation. Esther insisted that Emmy should begin with high-quality productions rather than settling for less. She believed first impressions mattered and wanted Emmy’s music and videos to reflect excellence from the very beginning. This level of practical mentorship gave Emmy both confidence and access to opportunities that might otherwise have taken years to secure.

Even with strong support behind her, Emmy admitted that fear remained part of her early journey. She recalled feeling uncertain about how audiences would respond to her music and whether she had made the right decision. Stepping into the spotlight required courage because it meant leaving behind the comfort of supporting others and taking responsibility for her own artistic path. Over time, however, those fears gave way to confidence as audiences embraced her music and connected with her message. Her willingness to trust the advice of someone who believed in her ultimately transformed her into one of Kenya’s most influential gospel musicians.

Today, Emmy Kosgei’s testimony serves as an inspiring reminder that great careers often begin with someone recognizing potential before the individual sees it for themselves. Her journey from modeling to becoming a celebrated Kalenjin gospel singer demonstrates the value of mentorship, perseverance and embracing one’s unique identity. Esther Wahome’s encouragement helped Emmy overcome doubt and inspired her to pursue a path that many believed was too risky at the time. By choosing to sing in Kalenjin despite her initial reservations, Emmy built a distinctive career that has touched countless lives through gospel music. Her story continues to inspire aspiring artists to trust their gifts, remain authentic and never underestimate the impact of someone who believes in their potential.
