Comedian and philanthropist Eric Omondi has once again captured the hearts of many Kenyans after stepping in to support Consolata Aoko Oduya, a grandmother from Homa Bay who went viral for attempting to pay her grandchildren’s school fees using six chickens. The story, which spread across social media platforms, moved many, but it was Eric’s heartfelt response that stood out.
Aoko’s two grandchildren had a combined school fees balance of KSh 245,000, which she was unable to clear. With no other options, she walked with the children to their school while carrying six chickens, hoping the school administration would accept them as partial payment. Photos of the determined grandmother sitting at the school’s administration block, chickens in tow, quickly went viral and caught Eric Omondi’s attention.
Eric immediately appealed to the public for help locating the family. “Please help me find this grandmother. If you know her, send me her number,” he wrote. Within a short time, he tracked down Consolata and her grandchildren. In a video shared on his platforms, Eric is seen warmly interacting with the family, feeding the chickens, and even trying to catch one as the grandmother watched with joy.
The comedian didn’t stop there. Touched by her sacrifice and determination, he pledged to fully cover the children’s education all the way to university. Additionally, Eric promised to help Consolata start a business so she could support her grandchildren without stress. In a heartfelt moment, the grandmother gifted Eric some maize, symbolizing her appreciation. Overwhelmed, she blessed him, saying, “I am very grateful for coming to help me and my grandchildren. God bless you.”
The two grandchildren, one aspiring to be a journalist and the other a doctor, changed into their uniforms and joined Eric in his vehicle. He personally took them back to school, where he met with the administration, spoke to the students during assembly, and posed for photos with excited learners. Eric later urged Kenyans to support Consolata through the number 0716 241 240, encouraging people to contribute in any way they could.
Online, Kenyans poured praise on Eric for his continued generosity and genuine care. Many lauded him as a true role model, while others shared personal stories of being raised by their grandmothers and understanding just how deep their love runs. The school’s administration was also applauded for not turning the grandmother away and for showing patience during her time of need.
This isn’t the first time Eric has gone out of his way to help a family in distress. Earlier, he had helped an orphaned boy and his grandmother by rallying Kenyans to contribute towards their education and housing. The project resulted in a new home and a renewed sense of hope for the family.
Eric Omondi’s efforts continue to shine a spotlight on real issues facing many Kenyans, reminding the public of the power of unity, compassion, and stepping up when someone needs help. His work proves that fame, when used well, can be a powerful tool for change.
