Kamba gospel musician Justina Syokau has released a new hit song titled Rais Ruto Busu, generating mixed reactions on social media. The song expresses gratitude to President William Ruto for honoring the late Raila Odinga with a state burial. Syokau also mentions Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in her tribute. Social media users have been divided over the song, with some praising it and others questioning her lyrical approach.
In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Syokau revealed that she shaved her hair to honor Raila Odinga. She explained that the late politician had often given her opportunities to perform during his political campaigns. “Yes, I had to honour him. He used to give me a job in his campaign,” she said. Raila passed away in India while receiving treatment, accompanied by his daughter Winnie and his sister Ruth Odinga, leaving many Kenyans mourning his loss.
The musician praised President Ruto for granting Raila a state burial, calling it a unifying gesture that brought leaders and citizens together. In her lyrics, she said, “President Ruto please receive a kiss for giving Raila a state burial, and you united all Kenyans. We thank you. You united all leaders. Ruto, I am giving you your flowers for respecting Raila. I give you my salute, and I celebrate you.” Syokau also acknowledged Deputy President Kindiki for ensuring that all arrangements at the burial were handled smoothly. Her song emphasizes gratitude toward political leaders who showed respect and unity during the mourning period.
Syokau further highlighted other political leaders’ roles in honoring Raila. She lauded former President Uhuru Kenyatta for attending the funeral and Kalonzo Musyoka for cutting short his UK trip to join Kenyans in mourning. “Rest in peace, we loved you,” she said, paying tribute to the former prime minister. The song reflects Syokau’s personal admiration for Raila and her appreciation for leaders who participated in the state burial.
The release of Rais Ruto Busu sparked intense debate online. Some social media users praised the musician for her tribute and for acknowledging political leaders, while others questioned her intentions and lyrical style. Comments ranged from suggestions for more songs reminding leaders of their promises to humorous remarks about her public salute to President Ruto. Syokau’s song joins a growing number of musical tributes honoring Raila Odinga, highlighting how music and politics intersect in Kenya’s contemporary culture.
