The national campaign to encourage Kenyans to get registered with a Huduma Number has exposed the differences between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto
DP Ruto was to spearhead the campaign in Kakamega county , while President Uhuru was to lead its campaign in Machakos county.
It all went well except for DP Ruto who went missing in action.
Similarly the event was headed by NASA leader Raila Odinga in Mombasa while former Vice President Musalia Mudavadi was in Kajiado and former VP Kalonzo Musyoka in Murang’a for similar assignments.
But DP Ruto was nowhere to be seen in Kakamega county.
Does it mean that DP Ruto who is President Uhuru’s key assistant did not honour the assignment ?
In Kakamega, no one knew his location during the event including top government officials who were waiting for him at the event.
Some of the top officials who could not find him at the event included Cabinet Secretaries Amina Mohammed (Sports), Mwangi Kiunjuri (Agriculture) and Eugene Wamalwa (Devolution)
CS Wamalwa was forced to tender an apology for DP Ruto and told the crowd that they were stepping in for the DP who was held somewhere else on official duties . CS Amina became the de facto chief guest
High Court allowed the government to launch the Huduma Namba registration but with several tough conditions pending the hearing
Such conditions included
- Not to force the public to acquire the number
- State was barred from sharing the data with international bodies
- The government was also restricted from using the data to withhold any services or bar anyone from accessing public facilities.
