Popular Kikuyu musician Gachathi wa Thuo has shared that he is facing serious financial pressure. He said he was at risk of losing family land after defaulting on a loan with an outstanding balance of KSh 3 million. Lenders had already taken his car to recover part of the debt. The land in question holds his home and his father’s home. Its value is about KSh 20 million, which made the situation urgent.
He reached out to philanthropist and gospel singer Karangu Muraya and asked him to share the story online. The goal was to gather support before the auction moved ahead. The response was immediate. Fans, business leaders and musicians acted fast. Karangu worked with several celebrities to organise an impromptu fundraiser at a hotel. The event attracted wide support from people who wanted to help the musician keep his property.
The fundraiser brought in KSh 1,722,000 within a few hours. Jose Gatutura helped push the idea. Dennis Itumbi, Moses Kuria, Waithaka Wa Jane and Kogi Investor joined the effort. Many fans also contributed both online and in person. Karangu later shared the update and encouraged more people to help cover the remaining amount so the debt could be cleared in full.
Gachathi explained that the pressure had built up over time. The auction threat created stress that affected every part of his life. The quick action from supporters gave him room to breathe. It also gave him a chance to work toward a more stable plan as he handles the remaining balance.
The show of support reflected the strong impact the singer has had on fans and fellow artists. It also showed how fast communities can mobilise when someone asks for help.
