The Kenya population and housing census data of 2009 documented that 33% of young adults in Kenya were full time students while 48.6% were employed. Although more young people in Kenya were in employment, most of them were engaged in the informal sector. 10.2% of young people were inactive home makers while 8% were unemployed.
From the 2009 population and housing census data, it is evident that 77% of young adults are either in vulnerable employment positions, inactive or unemployed, and are waiting for that one break which will start them off on their career path.
Waiting is a new normal for a lot of young graduates and professionals. What is important though is what you do while you are waiting. There are different activities young people can take on to be able to build, expand and strengthen professional and interpersonal skills. These include:
1. Temporary employment: Temporary employment opportunities allow you to demonstrate your skills, work ethics and interpersonal skills. Whoever hired you is likely to recommend you for a permanent position.
2. Volunteer: Volunteering says more about you. Not only can you get the work done, you are also passionate and care about helping people. Money is not the most important thing for you; volunteering portrays you as someone with character and integrity.
3. Make connections: Take time to build networks through family, social media, and professional organizations. Let your personal and professional networks know you are looking for a job, they can help you find work opportunities in organizations you are interested in.
4. Travel: When you travel into new locations you’ll be able to explore places and interact with new people. Travelling provides an opportunity to learn what other people are doing different, what opportunities are truly available and trends in your career field.
5. Attend classes or training: There are a lot of practical based classes and training from recognized institutions which you can attend to help you enhance your skills.
While waiting for the next career big break, it is important to invest your time into activities that will enhance your skills and work experience.
