Winnie Odinga has received a symbolic coronation from cultural elders in Bondo as the Odinga family prepares to mark the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The ceremony took place at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, the Odinga family’s ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, during a gathering that brought together elders, veterans, women and young people. The event carried both cultural and political significance because the elders publicly encouraged Winnie to step into a larger leadership role following her father’s death. Winnie, who serves as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly, also received counsel from the elders during the gathering. Her visit came at a sensitive time for the family and Raila’s supporters as preparations intensify for the first anniversary of his death on October 15, 2026.

The symbolic coronation was conducted by members of the Luo Council of Elders during a gathering at Opoda Farm in Bondo. Rose Otumba, the women’s representative of the Siaya Luo Council of Elders, placed a traditional hat on Winnie’s head as part of the ceremony. The gesture was presented as a symbolic recognition of Winnie as a political heir to her late father. The elders urged her to take up a larger role and carry forward aspects of Raila’s political legacy. The ceremony therefore attracted attention not simply because of its cultural elements, but because of what it could mean for the future political role of one of Raila Odinga’s daughters.

The gathering also provided an opportunity for members of the community to reflect on Raila Odinga’s death and the relationship he had with people across his political and social networks. Elders, veterans, women and young people attended and shared thoughts that they had not been able to express to Raila before his death. Winnie later described the gathering as a moment when people could finally share words they had kept to themselves. Her remarks reflected the emotional weight surrounding the first anniversary of Raila’s death. The event combined remembrance, cultural tradition and conversations about the future of the Odinga family.

Winnie also indicated that the elders did not only come to speak to her about her father. She said she received her own share of counsel from those present and emphasized that some things needed to be done properly. Her comments were carefully worded and did not amount to a detailed announcement of a new political position or electoral plan. However, coming immediately before Raila’s first death anniversary, the remarks have added to public interest in her political future. The symbolic coronation has consequently been viewed as an important moment in discussions about succession within the wider Odinga political family.

Raila Odinga died on October 15, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in India, ending a political career that spanned several decades. He was later buried at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who was Kenya’s first vice president. Raila was a former prime minister and one of the country’s most prominent opposition leaders, having contested the presidency several times. His death created a significant political and emotional gap for his family, supporters and the wider Kenyan political community. The first anniversary has therefore become an important period for remembering his contribution to Kenya’s political history and reflecting on what comes next for the people and movements associated with his legacy.

The timing of Winnie’s visit is also connected to preparations at Raila’s final resting place. The Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi has been undergoing construction and was nearing completion ahead of its planned formal handover and unveiling on October 7, 2026. The ceremony is expected to bring together senior Kenyan leaders and invited guests, while public access to the site is scheduled to follow the restricted unveiling. The mausoleum adds another important element to the first anniversary commemorations because it creates a permanent memorial space associated with Raila and the wider Odinga family history. The preparations at the site have therefore given additional significance to visits by family members and community leaders in the days leading up to the anniversary.

The Odinga family has also been preparing a programme of activities to remember Raila outside the usual political setting. The family has emphasized an inclusive approach to the commemorations, while the Orange Democratic Movement has separately planned events across the country during October. The two programmes reflect the broad reach of Raila’s legacy, which extends beyond party politics to communities, civil society, political activists and ordinary Kenyans who followed his long public career. The main anniversary events are expected to culminate at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo on October 15. This makes the ancestral home an important focal point for both the family’s remembrance activities and the wider public reflection on Raila’s life.

Winnie’s position within the Odinga family gives the ceremony an additional political dimension. She has maintained a public profile through her involvement in regional politics and her role in the East African Legislative Assembly. Her political future has attracted interest because she belongs to a family with a long history in Kenyan public life. Her grandfather, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, played a major role in the country’s independence struggle and became Kenya’s first vice president, while her father became one of the country’s most influential political figures. The elders’ decision to symbolically recognize Winnie therefore carries significance within a family whose political history stretches across generations.

The coronation should not, however, be interpreted as a formal transfer of a political office or as confirmation of a specific future electoral position. The ceremony was symbolic and cultural, even though the elders connected it directly to Winnie’s potential role in carrying forward her father’s political legacy. Any future political decision by Winnie would involve separate considerations, including the office she may seek, the political organization she may work with and the priorities she would present to voters. The ceremony itself does not establish a political mandate or determine the direction of Kenya’s political landscape. It does, however, show that some community elders see Winnie as someone who could assume a more prominent role.

The response from the elders also highlights the cultural importance of leadership and succession within the community. Traditional ceremonies can carry meanings that extend beyond the immediate event, particularly when they involve a prominent family and a figure with a major public legacy. In Winnie’s case, the symbolic act connected her to her father’s history while also placing expectations on her own future. Such expectations can be significant for a public figure who is still defining her individual political identity. The ceremony therefore represents both recognition of family heritage and an invitation to consider what role Winnie may play in public life.

For the Odinga family, the period surrounding the first death anniversary is likely to remain emotionally significant. Raila’s absence is being felt as preparations continue at the place where he was laid to rest. His widow, Ida Odinga, other family members, political allies and supporters have all participated in different aspects of the remembrance activities. The involvement of elders, veterans, women and youth also demonstrates the broad range of people who felt connected to Raila during his lifetime. Winnie’s visit allowed some of those people to express their feelings while also offering her advice as she navigates life after her father’s death.

The first anniversary of Raila Odinga’s death is therefore becoming more than a memorial occasion. It is also a period in which questions about his political legacy, family leadership and the future of the movement he influenced are receiving renewed attention. Winnie Odinga’s symbolic coronation in Bondo has added another layer to those discussions without providing a definitive answer about her next political step. Her statement that she received counsel from elders suggests that conversations about her future are already taking place within the community. What she ultimately chooses to do will depend on her own decisions and the political circumstances that develop after the anniversary.

Winnie Odinga’s visit to Kang’o ka Jaramogi has brought together grief, tradition, family history and questions about political succession at a significant moment for the Odinga family. The symbolic coronation by cultural elders presented her as a potential successor to aspects of Raila Odinga’s political legacy, while the gathering gave community members an opportunity to express feelings they had carried since his death. Winnie’s own remarks about receiving counsel indicate that the meeting also involved guidance about the responsibilities that may come with her family’s history. As Kenya prepares to remember Raila one year after his death, attention will remain on the commemorations, the newly completed mausoleum and the future roles of those closest to his legacy. For Winnie, the ceremony may become an important moment in her public journey, but her eventual political path will be defined by the decisions she makes in the years ahead.
