Celebrated Kenyan news anchor Zubeidah Kananu has announced her exit from Standard Media Group, bringing to a close an 18-year career at the Mombasa Road-based media house. The announcement came on Thursday, September 25, 2025, marking the end of a significant chapter in her professional life.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Zubeidah reflected on her time at Standard Media Group, highlighting the growth, lessons, and challenges she experienced. She described her years at the media house as transformative, noting the friendships and professional relationships that shaped her both as a person and as a journalist.
“I would like to personally share with you that after 18 fulfilling years of service at Standard Group PLC, I have reached the end of that chapter in my professional journey. Those years were filled with growth, learning, challenges, and friendships that have shaped the person and journalist I am today,” Zubeidah wrote.
Despite leaving Standard Media Group, Zubeidah emphasized that her commitment to the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG), where she serves as president, remains strong. She described her exit as the beginning of a new phase, focused on advancing ethical journalism, protecting press freedom, and mentoring the next generation of media leaders.
“While this transition marks the beginning of a new phase for me, my dedication to the Kenya Editors Guild and to our collective mission remains steadfast. I am fully committed to continuing the work we have begun together,” she stated.
Zubeidah also expressed gratitude to her fans, colleagues, and supporters for their unwavering encouragement over the years. She hinted at future engagements, including the upcoming Annual Editors’ Convention in Kilifi this November, signaling optimism for her next chapter.
Her announcement drew warm messages from colleagues and fans. Mashirima Kapombe congratulated her, saying, “Congratulations. God bless you in your new season my dear.” Chris Kirwa added, “Godspeed to new beginnings. The laughter during news we will never forget.” Fans and fellow journalists echoed similar sentiments, celebrating her contributions to Kenyan media.
