On 8th September at the KICC, Kenya’s own, world champion Fatuma Zarika will meet Mexican challenger Yamileth Mercado in the WBC super-bantamweight title bout in Nairobi.
Even as you prepare for the mega show-down, here are interesting facts you should know about Fatuma Zarika, who is the ‘New Conjestina ‘ in town.
- She was born 33 years ago on 13th of March to her separated parents Kang’ethe and Aisha Musa
- Fatuma lived a humble life in Nairobi’s Satellite estate, where she was born
- She was raised by her Ugandan mother after the divorce which caught up with her life at seven years old
- She boost of the only sibling, her brother Hemed Musa.
- She also went to Kabiria Primary school. After primary school she was forced into the job market.
- Fatuma began her work as a house nanny in Nairobi, helping her win her poor family a daily bread
- On 12th of August, 1997 Fatuma received her first bundle of joy, new born Sophia when she was a teenager aged 12 years old
- She fell out of job market and her mum was forced to look after Fatuma and her new born Sophia, Sophia’s dad was a deadbeat kind of men.
- Fatuma moved in to South B with her cousin, where she tried football and failed. But she did not give up.
- She moved to Mathare North in Eastlands where she met boxing tittle holder Conjestina Achieng’, it was here where her career blossom started. after finding her talent. At one point she fought her mentor Conjestina and went on to a result draw, she knew she had nailed her career path.
- Conjestina was the first African woman to hold an international title when she defeated Ugandan Fiona Tugume to take the vacant WIBF Middleweight crown.
