Human Resource Management is one of the key roles in today’s modern world. And how one handles human resource equally determines the success of the company.

Here are key quotes about human resource management every manager should read.

01. “I am convinced that nothing we do is more important than hiring and developing people. At the end of the day, you bet on people, not strategies.” – Lawrence Bossidy.

I like this sentence, so I put it first on the list.

02. “Train people well enough so they can leave. Treat them well enough, so they don’t want to.” – Sir Richard Branson.

That is a thoughtful perspective when managers are torn between training and retaining employees.

03. “When people are financially invested, they want a return. When people are emotionally invested, they want to contribute.” – Simon Sinek.

This saying is even more poignant when the human resource market is fiercely competitive; what do you take to attract and retain employees? At LinkedIn, I have never used compensation as a core tool to build and maintain the team. What I need more is a consensus in mindset, being able to look at the same goal together, and finally, respect and companionship to develop together.

04. “Hire character. Train skills”. – Peter Schutz

Quality recruitment, skill training. I like this quote because it is similar to my recruitment mindset, more precisely to the first element of my recruitment criteria. In all cases, I always apply the three most essential factors, which are:
– Human qualities
– Potentials
– Knowledge base.

If the applicants fail to prove that they are upright and decent, I will not need to consider other factors anymore; no matter how much I need someone, I will not hire.

The second is potential, because in a fast-growing business, if the quality is not good enough, it will not be able to keep up with the growth rate of the company, and as a result, the right person will become unsuitable in a short time.

Finally, it is the background knowledge; I invest a lot in training on Linkedin, but it will not retrain the understanding you should have learned from school.

05. “One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man” – Elbert Hubbard.

We don’t need to worry when devices are getting smarter. Let’s develop ourselves well, and maybe we will be the ones to create those machines!

06. “In order to build a rewarding employee experience, you need to understand what matters most to your people” – Julie Bevacqua

This is extremely important; not all rewards are suitable for everyone!

07. “Recently, I was asked if I was going to fire an employee who made a mistake that cost the company $600,000. No, I spent $600,000 training him. Why would I want to fire somebody with his experience?” – Thomas John Watson Sr.

Interesting perspective, isn’t it? What do you think after reading this sentence?

08. “Before you are a leader, success is about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is about growing others” – Jack Welch.

The quote explains for itself.

09. “To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart” – Eleanor Roosevelt.

As essential as it is. The road to your employees’ hearts is the best approach to maintaining your business.

10. “You cannot push anyone up the ladder unless they are willing to climb” – Andrew Carnegie.

This reminds me of a sentence I learned: “You can lead a horse to the river, but you can’t make it drink” (This is from a famous speaker whose name I forgot. However, his lesson stays with me till now)
