Have you ever gotten a feeling that something wasn’t right about a company? The office was decent, the interview went well, and everyone seemed nice—but there’s just something off that you can’t quite pinpoint?

Chances are your gut isn’t wrong. There are several subtle cues you might spot in your job search that could mean something a lot more significant: Joking about the incompetence of other employees could mean there’s an overbearing boss or the team doesn’t get along, or using a lot of meaningless buzzwords could mean there’s not a clear idea of what your role entails. Neither situation is a good one.
