Millicent Cassianes, a finalist for the Global Teacher Prize 2023, is a remarkable educator whose dedication to teaching children with special needs has made a significant impact in Kenya. Here are ten key points about her inspiring journey and contributions:

  1. Educational Background: Millicent graduated from Narok Teachers Training College with a Primary Teacher Certificate. Her passion for special needs education led her to further her studies at the Kenya Institute of Special Education, where she obtained a diploma specializing in learning difficulties, and later earned a degree in inclusive education, guidance, and counseling from Kenya Methodist University.
  2. Inspiration to Help Special Needs Children: Growing up in a village where children with special needs were often neglected, Millicent felt compelled to make a difference. Witnessing their struggles, she dedicated her life to ensuring they receive the education and care they deserve.
  3. Professional Experience: Millicent began her teaching career with the Teachers Service Commission, initially working as a P1 teacher at Amoyo Primary School and later at Senye Special Unit. Her work with special needs children eventually led her to BL Tezza Complex Primary School.
  4. Addressing the Needs of Vulnerable Children: At BL Tezza, she encountered a group of 60 orphaned children living with HIV, many of whom suffered from severe hearing loss. Millicent took it upon herself to learn how to treat their conditions and create individualized education programs to address their specific learning challenges.
  5. Founding BL Tezza Special School for the Deaf: Inspired by the children she worked with, Millicent founded the BL Tezza Special School for the Deaf. She began with a small group and gradually expanded through community sensitization efforts, ensuring more children were reached.
  6. Innovative Learning Approaches: Millicent developed a curriculum that incorporates ICT resources, such as YouTube videos, to broaden her students’ perspectives. This innovative approach has made learning more engaging and accessible for her students.
  7. Community Engagement and Support: To establish her school, Millicent actively sought community support through churches, public forums, and home visits. Her efforts led to the successful construction of the school’s facilities, funded by generous donations from local and international organizations.
  8. Holistic Education Model: The school’s curriculum includes environmental education, tree planting, vegetable and poultry farming, allowing students to apply their learning in practical ways. This approach empowers them with skills they can use in their home environments.
  9. Achievements in Sports and Academics: Millicent’s students have excelled not only academically, achieving high marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, but also in sports and dance. Her partnership with WeWorld NGO has enhanced her teaching methods, focusing on competency-based learning.
  10. Recognition and Impact: As a finalist for the Global Teacher Prize 2023, Millicent’s work has gained international recognition. Her commitment to improving the lives of children with special needs has made a lasting impact, inspiring educators and advocates around the world.

Millicent Cassianes embodies the spirit of compassion and innovation in education, showing how one individual can create profound change in their community. Her dedication to her students serves as an inspiration for educators globally, highlighting the importance of inclusive education.
