A culture has been developed where people are only after being employed. Graduates rush to draft their CVs with updated information ready to “tarmac” as they would be heard referring to their search for jobs. Many have closed their minds to the idea of being self-employed because society has taught that the only step after graduating from school is acquiring employment.
Looking for a job and being successful in securing one has its numerous advantages, but when you seem to be hitting dead ends, it may not be a bad idea to try and create employment for self. It is therefore important that we develop entrepreneurial mindsets.
Financial Times Lexicon has referred to Entrepreneurial mindset as a specific state of mind which orientates human conduct towards entrepreneurial activities and outcomes.
Entrepreneurship is a state of mind implying that we are all entrepreneurs if we set our minds to it, why then would you deny yourself the opportunity to better your living standards when you have the power to do so?
When everyone is being employed and you are not, when it seems like your applications are not getting any response, it is not time to despair but to get back to your strategy table and draft that idea that is about to set off your career.
An entrepreneurial mindset is developed through the following habits;
1. Being susceptible to change
You need to be able to accept positive change. Successful entrepreneurs are open to changes that will help them improve their businesses. Do not be quick to turn down an idea before giving it a thought or sometimes a try. You may never know the outcome of an undertaken risk before you take it, which is why it is called a risk. Evaluate the risk and it might just be the change you need.
2. Networking
Form bonds with people who may be of help to you. Interact with people who can advise you, mentor you or challenge you to be a better individual. The people you interact with may sometimes invest in your idea or give you referrals that will assist in developing the idea.
3. Be self-motivated
If you are not able to push yourself, you may have to wait for someone to do so for you and that may never happen. You have gone through school or perhaps achieved one or two things in your life, that is force enough to have you do something about your ‘unemployed status’. Do not be discouraged but be optimistic because that will help you to be resilient and achieve positive results.
4. Develop a positive attitude
The United States of America president developed the “YES WE CAN” slogan and he ended up making history.
We are our own enemies and can hinder ourselves from achievements we would have otherwise made if we believed in ourselves. Believe in yourself, develop a YES YOU CAN attitude and be sure that you are headed for great things.
5. Be focused
Set your mind to what adds value to your journey. Set goals and ensure you work towards them. Do not let petty issues swerve you from your purpose. The race does not stop until you get to the finish line.
