A tragic incident unfolded along the bustling Waiyaki Way in Westlands, Nairobi, as a lorry ferrying fifty casual workers back from work careened out of control, resulting in one fatality and leaving twenty-five individuals with severe injuries. The passengers, primarily returning from formal employment, had resorted to hitching a ride on the lorry due to a lack of bus fare.

Tragic accident in Waiyaki Way, Nairobi

Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying scene as the lorry lost control and crashed over a concrete highway demarcation, near the Westland Expressway exit. Prompt emergency response was crucial, with over five ambulances rushing to the scene to transport the victims to various hospitals across the city.

A police officer present at the site confirmed the incident, highlighting the grim toll: “One person has died as a result of the accident, while over 25 sustained serious injuries.” The cause of the accident, according to police reports, stemmed from the lorry driver’s loss of control, leading to the collision with the concrete barrier and subsequent crash onto the hard pavement.

The aftermath of the crash extended beyond the physical injuries, causing a significant traffic jam along the usually busy thoroughfare. However, the accident also served as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by lorries and trucks that often transport numerous stowaways clinging perilously to their exteriors.

Residents and concerned citizens have urged traffic police officers to take proactive measures, calling for stricter monitoring of vehicles and drivers known to transport such risky passengers. The practice of hitching rides on lorries, driven by economic necessity, has led to numerous accidents and tragedies, with passengers enduring perilous journeys in search of livelihoods.

Finally, as the injured receive medical care and the community grapples with the aftermath, the incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address road safety concerns and protect vulnerable commuters from such preventable tragedies.
