On Tuesday, March 5, a significant change rippled through Kenya’s National Assembly as Speaker Moses Wetangula announced the replacement of MP Salasya, from the Departmental Committee on Regional Development. This decision met with both anticipation and speculation, saw Rongo Sub County MP Paul Abuor stepping into Salasya’s role.

The Speaker’s announcement underscored the culmination of deliberations that stemmed from concerns over Salasya’s tenure, deemed controversial by many within the legislative body. Wetangula, in delivering the verdict, referenced a broader resolution dating back to October 27, 2022, which empowered the house to effect such changes. The approval of Abuor’s appointment signalled a shift in the assembly’s dynamics, reflective of its commitment to maintaining integrity and efficacy in its committees.

The catalyst for this shake-up emerged from the corridors of power, voiced by the Majority Leader of the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wah. Additionally, his vocal critique highlighted a growing unease regarding the lacklustre participation of certain legislators in committee proceedings. Ichung’wah’s call for a comprehensive reassessment struck a chord, urging a meticulous review of MPs’ dedication to their respective committees.

The proposed reevaluation, as outlined by Ichung’wah, extends beyond mere attendance metrics to encompass the depth of engagement exhibited by MPs during committee sessions. Furthermore, this recalibration aims to identify and rectify instances of absenteeism or passive involvement, ensuring that the legislative machinery operates at optimal efficiency.

Integral to this recalibration is the scrutiny of MPs’ conduct within the chamber itself. Ichung’wah’s emphasis on punctuality and active participation echoes a broader sentiment within the assembly, resonating with the need for accountability and commitment among its members.

Finally, in endorsing these measures, the National Assembly reaffirms its commitment to upholding parliamentary decorum and efficacy. The proactive stance taken by leadership underscores dedication to fostering a culture of responsibility and engagement among MPs.
