Jack Mutinda, best known for his role as Dr. Mckenzie on the popular TV show The Real Househelps of Kawangware, has shared exciting insights into his blossoming acting career. From Journalism to Acting
Mutinda’s journey into acting was not straightforward. Initially trained in journalism at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC), Mutinda always dreamt of becoming a news anchor, inspired by renowned journalists like Esther Arunga. However, during his first semester at KIMC, he discovered his passion for acting when he was cast in a short film for the school’s final project. This experience opened doors to his acting career, leading him to star in The Real Househelps of Kawangware as Dr. Mckenzie, a role that cemented his popularity.
Although his first TV appearance was as an extra on Mali, it was The Real Househelps of Kawangware that propelled him into the limelight. Despite leaving the show years ago, Mutinda is still fondly remembered by fans, many of whom continue to call him “Daktari.”
A Diverse Career on Screen
Beyond The Real Househelps of Kawangware, Mutinda has made appearances in numerous other local TV shows. His acting credits include Tahidi High, Visanga, Pray and Prey, Hullabaloo, Maempress, and Kangaroo Court. These roles have allowed him to explore a wide range of characters, from the comical to the dramatic.
However, Mutinda explained that he aims to make every role stand out and memorable, even when the character is not as prominent. Despite being frequently cast as the villain, he continues to challenge himself with each role to ensure his performances remain fresh and impactful.
New Role in ‘Broken’
Mutinda’s latest venture is his role in Broken, a new KTN drama series. In this show, he plays a significant character — the in-law of the lead actress. The storyline revolves around a woman who is impregnated by a man who then leaves her in the village. After a long search, she eventually finds him, and the drama unfolds.
What makes this role special for Mutinda is the shift in character. Unlike his previous villainous roles, in Broken he plays the “good guy.” This marks a refreshing change for the actor, who admits that he is often typecast as the antagonist. Mutinda expressed his excitement for this role, hinting at the possibility of landing a leading role in future projects, which is a goal he is actively working towards.

While Mutinda is grateful for the success he’s achieved, he has bigger aspirations for his career. “I look forward to the day I’ll be the main character in a show or a movie; that is the one thing I’m really aspiring for, and it’s gonna be soon, I believe,” he shared. This ambition reflects his dedication to growing as an actor and taking on roles that will challenge his range and talent.
Personal Life and Future Plans
Outside of his acting career, Mutinda is in a relationship and is planning to make things official with his girlfriend. His personal life, however, has not overshadowed his professional goals, as he continues to focus on his craft and pursue new opportunities in the entertainment industry.
