Karen Nyamu Booed in Embu Over SHIF Remarks

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu faced an unfriendly reception in Embu after urging residents to register for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). The politician, who was speaking at a funeral, was met with boos as she attempted to convince the mourners to sign up for the government-backed health program.

Nyamu acknowledged that SHIF had encountered several challenges but insisted that it was a world-class initiative. However, her attempt to downplay political differences and push for registration was cut short as the crowd rejected her message. When she asked if they wanted her to stop talking about SHIF, the response was a resounding “yes.”

Frustrated by the reaction, Nyamu warned the residents not to seek financial assistance from her in case of medical emergencies. “You don’t want to hear? No one should call me for harambees when they fall sick,” she declared.

Her statement sparked criticism online, with some questioning her leadership qualities. Social media users argued that if SHIF was beneficial, politicians would not have to promote it aggressively. Others referenced past reports of Nyamu allegedly struggling with rent payments, sarcastically asking why she thought Kenyans would turn to her for help.

Despite the controversy, Nyamu remains vocal in her political engagements. Meanwhile, she has also hinted at co-parenting struggles with musician Samidoh, following their rumored breakup earlier this year.
