Former Citizen TV journalist Willis Raburu left the station two years ago after 13 years to pursue further studies and spend more time with his family. His decision, announced in June 2023, marked a significant shift in his career as he sought personal growth, including pursuing a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication and Development at the United States International University.
Shortly after leaving Citizen TV, Raburu joined TV47 to host Wabebe Experience, a show designed to provide a platform for other creatives to showcase their talents. His stint at TV47 lasted nine months, after which he decided to focus fully on his own projects. Despite the brief tenure, the show laid the foundation for Raburu’s current vision of amplifying the voices of creatives across different fields.
Through Wabebe Experience, Raburu emphasizes empowering others rather than seeking personal fame. He aims to create a platform where artists and innovators can inspire audiences and gain visibility. In recent interviews, he highlighted that his current work is about mentorship, collaboration, and offering opportunities to emerging talent.
On returning to mainstream media, Raburu is clear about his terms. He stated that any future move to television or radio would require a substantially different concept and a compensation package reflecting his value. “If there is anyone who can pay me over KSh 1 million, then we can talk. But for now, my eyes have seen the glory,” he said.
Raburu’s departure from traditional media reflects a growing trend among journalists and media personalities who seek flexibility, personal growth, and opportunities to shape content independently. His approach demonstrates how media figures can leverage their experience to build platforms that support and elevate others.
While he remains away from mainstream TV, Raburu continues to influence the media landscape through Wabebe Experience, showing that success can extend beyond personal recognition to fostering the growth of an entire creative community.
