Kikuyu Love Sessions has grown into one of Kenya’s most unique cultural phenomena, redefining how love and music intersect. The event celebrates flirting and romance in Kikuyu, turning vernacular expression into a powerful tool for connection and entertainment.

Founded by Allan Gitau, what began as a small experiment in Kikuyu R&B has evolved into a movement. Gitau explains that speaking one’s mother tongue while flirting was once seen as outdated. Today, phrases like “Nĩngwendete” carry a charm unmatched by English declarations of love.

The event combines music, poetry, and performance, blending the intimacy of home with the energy of Nairobi nightlife. Attendees leave feeling entertained and culturally connected, making each edition a communal celebration of identity.

The journey started with just 80 attendees. Allan invested Sh200,000 to Sh300,000 in the first show and lost it all. Despite the losses, the passion for showcasing Kikuyu love songs fueled growth. A wooden stage nicknamed The Bed became a symbol of the event, adding character and continuity to every show.

Kikuyu Love Sessions has also become a space where romance begins. Several couples have met at the events, and at least one couple from the second edition later got engaged. Creative editions like Grown-Up Edition, Bonded Hearts Edition, and Catching Feelings have kept the audience engaged, each telling a different story through music and performance. The Mothers and Melodies edition gave families a new way to celebrate Mother’s Day with live music and shared experiences.

The latest edition, More Than Friends, drew over 3,000 attendees, showing exponential growth from the first show. Gitau emphasizes that the success is about more than numbers; it’s about fostering cultural pride and identity.

To nurture future talent, Kikuyu Sessions launched a talent search for Kenya’s next female vernacular DJ in collaboration with DJ Dool. Fans on YouTube will choose the winner, ensuring community participation and transparency.

Kikuyu Love Sessions stands out not just for its music but for its energy and inclusivity. It has become a space where couples dance off-beat, families celebrate together, and artists perform with authenticity. Allan Gitau’s vision has turned a small cultural experiment into a nationwide movement, promoting love, identity, and positivity through the Kikuyu language.
