Media personality Kamene Goro has opened up about why she has never pursued a legal career, despite earning a law degree from the University of Nairobi. Kamene explained that her parents encouraged her to study law, but her true passion has always been journalism. She revealed that she found working in media more financially rewarding and personally fulfilling than practicing law.
In a recent interview on the Mic Cheque Podcast, Kamene shared that she never attended the Kenya School of Law because she had no interest in becoming a practicing lawyer. She said that during her second-year clinicals, she realized that entering law firms would not meet her financial expectations. Kamene added that while her classmates struggled with entry-level salaries at law firms, she was earning six to seven times more as a radio host.
Kamene has built a strong brand in media, working at top radio stations and gaining a loyal following. She also shared her long-term career goals, which include becoming a law lecturer and drafting legislation for Kenya’s digital media industry. Kamene is focused on learning theoretical law and statute creation, aiming to create laws that will regulate media operations in the fast-evolving digital space.
Reflecting on her early radio career, Kamene discussed her time co-hosting shows with Andrew Kibe at NRG Radio and later Kiss FM. She described the unique challenges of working with Kibe, including his habit of arriving late and taking frequent breaks. Kamene managed the early morning show alone at 6 am and adapted to his work style. She also revealed that both she and Kibe earned the same salary at Kiss FM, with Kibe helping to negotiate her pay when they first joined.
