Kenyan fans first knew Kevin Maina through his poetic alter ego, Maina Mind, a soft-spoken performer who turned raw emotion into cinematic social media monologues. His journey into acting began when he stepped onto the set of the hit series ‘Single Kiasi,’ turning a minor role into a memorable character.
In an interview, Kevin credited poetry for shaping his approach to acting. “I started Maina Mind to show my performative side. Poetry has always been my safe space, my mirror, my madness,” he said. He explained that his videos were more than reciting lines—they involved directing his world, from lighting and angles to tone and mood, which gave them a short-film feel.
Kevin’s transition to acting began with a simple direct message from the show’s producers, who invited him to bring his on-camera charm to the series. His initial role as Ritchie was minor, intended as a blink-and-miss character. But on his first day, producers Philippe Bresson and Grace Kahaki encouraged him to reimagine the character, giving him creative freedom to shape Ritchie’s humour, charm, and unpredictability.
The results were immediate. Kevin leaned into comedic timing and emotional unpredictability, earning more scenes and a deeper storyline. Ritchie quickly became a standout character, with fans responding to his unique vibe and relatability.
Kevin describes ‘Single Kiasi’ as louder, braver, and more unfiltered than his previous local and international work. He said the show encourages risk-taking, which has pushed him creatively and shaped his personal brand. The feedback, both praise and criticism, fuels his work. He enjoys seeing strong reactions, whether through memes, messages, or think pieces, viewing them as a sign that the work resonates with viewers.
Season 4 introduced more physicality and stunts for Ritchie, which Kevin performed himself. “There’s a lot of fighting this season. I had days where I went home sore, but it made the character more real,” he said. He emphasized that doing the stunts himself added authenticity and intensity to the role.
Kevin also sees poetry and acting as intertwined disciplines. His debut poetry album, ‘Midnight Poetry,’ reflects this convergence, with tracks inspired by Ritchie, including “Naitwa Kevo.” He plans to explore the intersection of spoken word and storytelling further, merging his skills as a poet and actor to create deeper, more immersive narratives.
From social media poet to dynamic television actor, Kevin Maina has demonstrated how creativity, risk-taking, and authenticity can transform a small role into a cultural touchstone, captivating audiences across Kenya.
