Legendary reggae artiste Luciano has urged musicians to stay away from political endorsements, arguing that politics creates division and exposes artistes to unnecessary risks. Luciano, born Jepther McClymont, arrived in Nairobi on Monday, November 17, for a series of engagements supported by Kenyan media and entertainment partners. His visit includes fan interactions, performances and media appearances across platforms such as K24 TV, Milele FM, Kameme FM, Sound Hauntee, Good Vibes Festival, The Dome and Mövenpick Hotel.
Luciano explained why he keeps his distance from politics. He said that political involvement often leads to trickery and conflict, which can damage an artiste’s relationship with fans. He said he does not understand why some young artistes align themselves with politicians. He added that the costs are high because politics can divide an audience and create tension around an artiste’s message. According to him, music should unite people, not separate them.
Luciano has influenced the global reggae scene for more than two decades. Fans know him as the king of conscious reggae because his work blends spiritual themes with strong melodies. Born in Davyton in Mandeville Parish, Jamaica, he grew up listening to Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. Their music shaped his beliefs and inspired him to embrace unity and hope in his own work.
His career gained momentum in the early 1990s when he collaborated with producer Philip Fatis Burrell. This partnership produced major songs such as One Way Ticket and set the stage for the release of his widely praised album Where There Is Life. The project included It’s Me Again Jah and Who Could It Be, songs that strengthened his global reach.
His 1996 album Messenger further established his identity as The Messenjah. That title has followed him for years because of his focus on conscious messages and spiritual reflection. Luciano’s message in Nairobi focused on the importance of preserving artistic integrity. He encouraged musicians to protect their platforms and avoid decisions that may pull them into political battles. He said music should build unity and inspire positive change without the influence of political interests.
