Kenyan comedian and philanthropist Eric Omondi has reached out to Mercy Kanini, the 28-year-old Kenyan mother whose extraordinary quintuplet birth was followed by the devastating loss of four of her newborn children. Kanini, who comes from Juja in Kiambu County, delivered five babies at Thika Level Five Hospital on September 13 in a rare natural birth. She welcomed four girls and one boy, but the family’s joy quickly turned into grief after the four girls died while receiving specialised care at Kenyatta National Hospital. The surviving boy remains at the centre of the family’s attention as Kanini and her relatives cope with the loss. Omondi was moved by the family’s situation and travelled to Kenyatta National Hospital while making calls to urge staff to assist them.

Kanini’s delivery was already an extraordinary medical event before the tragedy that followed. The young mother reportedly delivered the five babies naturally at Thika Level Five Hospital, making the birth one of the rare multiple deliveries recorded in Kenya. What made the event even more unexpected was that her routine antenatal scans had reportedly identified only four babies during pregnancy. The arrival of the fifth baby therefore came as a surprise to the family and medical team. The birth initially brought immense happiness to Kanini’s family as they welcomed four daughters and a son, but the situation changed after the newborns were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised medical care.

The family’s happiness was short-lived after four of the babies, all girls, died at Kenyatta National Hospital. A relative who spoke with Omondi described the difficult moments after the babies arrived at the referral facility and were placed in incubators. According to the account, three of the girls died at almost the same time, while the family later learned that another baby had also passed away. The family had reportedly arrived at the hospital at around 9am and was already dealing with the shock of losing the children. Only one of the five newborns survived, leaving the family to deal with an extraordinary birth that had become a deeply painful experience.

Kanini was also reportedly experiencing physical difficulties following the delivery as she dealt with back pain and a swollen leg. At a time when she was grieving four of her children, her relatives were also trying to navigate the hospital environment and make arrangements for the newborns who had died. The situation prompted concern from Omondi, who said he spoke directly with Kanini after learning what the family was going through. He then made a public appeal for the relevant hospital officials to assist the grieving mother and her relatives. His intervention focused on ensuring that the family could access the necessary support while dealing with the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.

Omondi filmed himself from the driver’s seat of his car as he travelled towards Kenyatta National Hospital to offer assistance. During the video, he explained that he had been communicating with the family and was concerned about their situation. He appealed to hospital officials to help the mother without waiting for him to arrive at the facility. Omondi also referred to his previous visit to the hospital, saying he had been there about two weeks earlier while helping a patient who was dealing with endometriosis. He recalled receiving assistance from hospital staff during that visit and used the experience to appeal for similar support for Kanini and her family.

The comedian specifically called for assistance with the mother’s access to care and with arrangements surrounding the bodies of the four babies. He also appealed for the family to receive relief from hospital charges given the circumstances surrounding the loss. His appeal reflected the practical challenges that can arise for families dealing with the death of newborns after complicated or high-risk births. Beyond the emotional pain, families can also face medical, administrative and financial responsibilities at a time when they are struggling to process what has happened. Omondi’s decision to intervene brought additional public attention to Kanini’s situation and the difficulties her family was facing at the hospital.

The story of Mercy Kanini has drawn attention because of both the rarity of the quintuplet birth and the heartbreaking outcome that followed. Delivering five babies is uncommon and carrying a multiple pregnancy can involve significant medical risks for both the mother and newborns. In Kanini’s case, the birth itself became a remarkable moment before the family’s circumstances changed within a short period. The survival of one baby has provided the family with a source of hope while they mourn the four children they lost. Kanini’s relatives have now been left to support her through recovery from childbirth as the family also makes arrangements connected to the deaths.

Eric Omondi’s intervention has added another dimension to a story that has already attracted significant public attention. Known for combining entertainment with charitable activities, the comedian chose to respond directly after learning about Kanini’s situation rather than simply commenting from a distance. His journey to Kenyatta National Hospital showed his intention to engage with the family and seek immediate assistance for them. The case also highlights the importance of support for families facing serious medical emergencies and bereavement. As Kanini continues recovering from the birth and coping with the loss of four of her children, attention remains focused on the surviving baby and the support available to the grieving family.

Mercy Kanini’s quintuplet birth will remain a significant and deeply emotional chapter in her life, marked by both the extraordinary arrival of five children and the devastating loss of four of them. Her family’s experience has highlighted the complex realities that can follow high-risk multiple births, particularly when newborns require specialised medical care. Eric Omondi’s decision to reach out has brought further attention to the family’s immediate needs at a difficult time. While the surviving boy remains with the family, Kanini must also recover physically and emotionally from an experience that changed her life within days. The focus now remains on supporting the mother, caring for her surviving child and helping the family navigate the painful aftermath of losing four newborn daughters.
