The contemporary music landscape has received a major addition with the arrival of What Africa?, the newly launched album by South African outfit Azania Jazz Co. As the third body of work delivered by the band in 2026, the album builds upon a catalog that includes Afro Jazz Nights and Between Africa’s Rivers.
The release is instantly recognizable by its striking sleeve design—a dark backdrop framing a figure clad in patterned African textiles, topped with an old-school static TV. Musically, the album brings together uptempo electronic house foundations, organ-led gospel melodies, and improvisational jazz elements.
The project’s 13 compositions—including “Free at Last, Broke at Last”, “Constitution”, “Helicopter”, “Prosperity Gospel”, “Another Church?”, “Cold Drink”, “Door to Door”, “Madlanga”, “Xenophobia”, “Abahambe!”, “Mhondoro”, and “Nashi Nashi”—are structured sequentially to create an immersive listening experience. Rather than detailing specific song narratives, the band presents the collection as a continuous sonic journey.
Listeners can now stream What Africa? across all major music distribution platforms.
