Kenyan socialite Amber Ray has sparked controversy after criticizing local celebrity weddings, urging them to take inspiration from Tanzanian model and businesswoman Hamisa Mobetto’s extravagant wedding. Amber, who had initially planned to tie the knot this year, admitted that watching Hamisa’s grand affair made her reconsider her own wedding plans.

Amber Ray’s Criticism of ‘Cheap’ Weddings

In a candid statement, Amber Ray expressed her disappointment with how Kenyan celebrities conduct their weddings, arguing that they should invest more in making their ceremonies grand and unforgettable.

“I was watching Hamisa’s wedding—she set the bar high. Did you see how many cattle she was given? Did you see the setup?” she asked.

The socialite added that seeing a fellow woman receive such an opulent celebration was motivating. However, she also threw shade at celebrities who opt for budget-friendly weddings.

“Some people have big names, but their events have KSh 2,000 décor. Those who love doing low-budget events, I hope you have seen what a proper wedding looks like,” she stated.

Amber also admitted that the pressure to have an impressive wedding made her reconsider her plans, prompting her to go “back to the drawing board.”

Backlash from Fans and Celebrities

Amber Ray’s remarks did not sit well with many social media users, who accused her of promoting unrealistic expectations. Among those who responded to her was former Miss Kenya Rachel Mbuki, who slammed the socialite for her statement.

“This is so stupid to say. Have the wedding you can afford. Don’t get into debt trying to have a lavish wedding to set standards for people who don’t care at the end of the day,” Mbuki said.

She further argued that true success is about building something sustainable rather than faking a luxurious lifestyle.

Hamisa Mobetto’s Lavish Wedding

Amber Ray’s comments were sparked by the grand wedding of Hamisa Mobetto and footballer Stephane Aziz Ki. The couple held an extravagant traditional dowry ceremony, where Hamisa received several highly valued Ankole cattle as part of her bride price. The ceremony was marked by luxurious décor, stunning African-themed outfits, and a star-studded guest list.

Amber Ray’s remarks have sparked an important debate about weddings, finances, and societal pressure. While some believe that celebrities should go all out for their weddings, others argue that affordability and sustainability should come first. Whether Amber Ray follows through with her grand wedding plans remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure—her comments have ruffled some feathers in the Kenyan entertainment scene.
