Kenyan playwright and producer Anko Kenrene has made history by hosting the country’s first-ever stadium film premiere in Embu. The ambitious project, entirely self-funded, cost approximately KSh 900,000 and attracted attention from dignitaries and the public alike.

Kenrene revealed that planning began in June and took about three months to complete both the film production and the event arrangements. Despite financial and logistical challenges, his passion for the arts motivated him to bring the premiere to life. He acknowledged support from Safiri Nasi, a tour and travel company, which assisted with some production costs, although the event did not generate profit due to limited local demand for large-scale film events.

The premiere was attended by key figures including Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who provided the stadium venue and financial support, as well as Manyatta MP John Mukunji and Senator Mundigi. Their presence highlighted the growing recognition of local creative initiatives and boosted the profile of the event.

Looking ahead, Kenrene expressed ambitions beyond the stadium premiere. He aims to distribute his work on platforms like Netflix and has aspirations of earning international recognition, including an Oscar. He emphasized gratitude toward his fans and supporters and encouraged other Kenyan creators to continue improving local content to meet global standards.

Kenrene’s historic premiere is a milestone for Kenyan cinema, demonstrating that local filmmakers can organize large-scale events and generate interest in homegrown productions. It also signals a growing appetite for professional, high-quality Kenyan content and sets a benchmark for future creative projects in the country.
