Bahati Faces Backlash for Failing to Honour KSh 1 Million Pledge to Harambee Stars

Musician Kevin Bahati has come under scrutiny after reportedly failing to fulfil his KSh 1 million pledge to Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars. The promise followed the team’s crucial Group A win over Morocco on August 9, a match in which Bahati and his wife, Diana, had pledged to reward the players.

Bahati initially delayed delivering the cash, citing strict CHAN 2024 regulations that restricted access to the players’ changing rooms immediately after the match. He explained that he had coordinated with FKF deputy chairman McDonald Mariga to hand over the funds during a training session before the team’s final group match against Zambia.

Despite the explanation, several Harambee Stars players revealed on Citizen TV on August 17 that Bahati had still not provided the promised money. One player noted that the only financial rewards received were from President William Ruto, adding that Bahati had been seen on social media but the cash had not reached them.

The revelation sparked public backlash, with fans urging Bahati to honour his commitment. Comments on social media included Cavince Chuxx saying, “Usiwahi promise mkenya kitu. Unaweza pelekwa polisi,” while others criticized him for perceived clout chasing and failing to follow through on his word. Netizens emphasized that promises should be fulfilled, particularly when they involve national achievements.

In contrast, President William Ruto increased his rewards for Harambee Stars after their final group match against Zambia. He offered KSh 2.5 million per player for the victory and pledged two-bedroom affordable houses for each player if the team won in the quarter-finals. The incentives appeared to motivate the team, who defeated Zambia 1-0 and finished the group stage unbeaten.

Bahati’s delayed pledge highlights public expectations for celebrities to back their words with action, especially when tied to national pride and sporting achievements. Fans continue to demand that the musician fulfil his KSh 1 million promise to the Harambee Stars.
