On October 31, 2024, major Kenyan newspapers highlighted the mysterious death of Joshua Muthoka, a 49-year-old employee at Bata Kenya, following an incident at the company’s factory in Limuru, Kiambu County. The news has sparked discussions around workplace health policies and employee rights in the country.

Death of Joshua Muthoka

According to reports from Daily Nation, Muthoka had sought a day off on October 26 due to severe chest pains but was denied permission to take leave. Despite his illness, he reported to work that day. Colleagues noted that he continued to suffer from a headache and chest pain while on duty.

When Muthoka’s condition worsened, he attempted to reach an outpatient health facility located within the factory premises. Unfortunately, there was no medical staff available to assist him at that moment. Colleagues described the distressing scene as Muthoka crawled in search of help, ultimately succumbing to his condition. His body was later taken to the Tigoni Level IV Hospital mortuary.

Bata Kenya has refrained from commenting on the incident, citing a lack of awareness and the absence of a post-mortem report. Family members of the deceased have raised allegations of negligence regarding Muthoka’s death, underscoring the need for accountability within the workplace.

Broader Context: Workplace Health and Safety

This incident has drawn attention to the critical importance of workplace health and safety regulations. Employees must have access to medical assistance when needed, and employers are encouraged to foster a supportive environment where health concerns can be addressed without fear of retribution or denial of sick leave.

Rising Concerns About Femicide

In addition to the Bata Kenya incident, The Standard reported on a troubling rise in femicide cases in the country. Police authorities have revealed that at least 97 women have been murdered in the past three months, prompting calls for collective action to combat this alarming trend. Directorate of Criminal Investigations officials emphasized the need for dialogue among community members, leaders, and law enforcement to tackle this ongoing issue.

Ongoing Investigations

Another key story covered was the ongoing investigation into the murder of Wells Fargo Human Resource Manager Willis Ayieko. Detectives arrested two female suspects and recovered a stolen firearm connected to the case. This situation highlights the pressing issues of violence and crime in Kenya, further fueling public discourse on safety and security.

The reports from various publications today not only shed light on the tragic death of Joshua Muthoka but also emphasize broader societal issues regarding workplace rights, health, and safety. As Kenyans grapple with these challenging topics, it is essential for stakeholders to engage in constructive discussions aimed at promoting a safer and healthier working environment for all.
