Former Tanzanian pop star Vanessa Mdee has finally opened up about the personal struggles that led her to walk away from the music industry at the peak of her career. In a heartfelt interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, Mdee revealed that her decision was rooted in the toll that fame and industry pressures had taken on her mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Vanessa shared that behind the glamour and accolades, she was battling inner demons that eventually pushed her to seek a more fulfilling and authentic life. “It was depleting my mental, spiritual, physical and emotional health in many ways. I turned to many different vices that were not good for me as a person,” she said. Her honesty highlighted the darker side of the entertainment world, which often remains hidden behind the spotlight.

She was clear that her departure from music wasn’t a pause, but a complete step away from the industry. “What I do not do anymore is release music for the industry. I have no interest in charts or accolades,” she said. Her words mark a clear shift from the ambitions that once drove her during her years of dominating East African airwaves with hits like Cash Madame.

Despite the challenges she faced, Vanessa expressed deep pride in her musical legacy. She noted that her time in the spotlight helped open doors for a new generation of female artistes. “I love that I had a moment in music that has shaped and paved the way for many other young girls,” she said, acknowledging her influence on the industry even after her exit.

Now based in the United States, Vanessa is focused on raising her children and building a life with her husband, American singer and actor Rotimi. Their relationship, often showcased in warm and joyful moments on social media, has been a major part of her new chapter. However, recent online speculation has hinted at possible issues in their marriage, with some fans interpreting Vanessa’s posts as attempts to mask deeper challenges. Still, neither Vanessa nor Rotimi has directly addressed these rumors, and many admirers continue to view their bond as genuine and strong.

Vanessa’s journey from chart-topping star to devoted mother and wife is a powerful story of choosing inner peace over public validation. She continues to live her truth, sharing glimpses of her spiritual growth and family life while steering clear of the pressures that once defined her. In stepping away from music, Vanessa Mdee may have exited the stage—but she remains a resonant voice for authenticity, healing, and purpose.
