The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international, non-profit research
organization that envisions transforming lives in Africa through research. APHRC conducts policy-relevant
research on population and health in Africa geared towards generating high quality evidence to inform
decision making for an effective and sustainable response to the most critical challenges facing the
continent. Among APHRC’s prime areas of focus in urban informal settlements or slums is food and
nutrition security.
Healthy Food Africa (HFA) is a research & innovation project aiming at more sustainable, equitable and
resilient food systems in 10 African cities. The project is a collaborative effort by 17 partners in Europe and
Africa, funded by the European Union Horizon2020 programme.
HFA aims at improving nutrition in Africa by strengthening the diversity, sustainability, resilience & connectivity of food systems. APHRC is implementing the HFA Food System Lab in Nairobi (HFA FSL-Na). The HFA FSL-Na aims to test the
feasibility and effectiveness of innovative urban farming in Korogocho and Viwandani informal settlements
of Nairobi.
