Kenyan comedian Sammy Kioko has been hospitalised after an alleged assault by Machakos county government officers, sparking widespread concern and outrage across social media. The incident occurred while Kioko was protesting to demand a disputed payment of KSh19 million from the county government under Governor Wavinya Ndeti. Fellow comedian Tom Daktari, who had been arrested alongside Kioko, was later released, leaving Kioko in critical condition. Videos and images shared online show him being pushed on a stretcher at a hospital, highlighting the severity of the situation. Several celebrities quickly came forward, condemning the alleged attack and calling for accountability from the county government.

The incident reportedly unfolded after Kioko and a group of comedians mobilised to stage a protest at the county government headquarters. Comedian Nasra Yusuff detailed the events on her Instagram story, expressing shock at the violence Kioko endured. According to her, the protest was meant to support Kioko in securing his rightful payment, yet it escalated into a situation that left him injured and traumatised. Nasra described the scene as heartbreaking, noting that Kioko had been in perfect health just hours before the assault. Her posts emphasised the unnecessary brutality he suffered, portraying a deeply disturbing scenario that triggered both public sympathy and outrage.

After the alleged assault, Kioko was first taken to a local facility in Athi River before being transferred to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital. Supporters, friends, and fellow comedians accompanied him, documenting his transfer and providing updates on his condition. Eventually, Kioko was moved to Nairobi West Hospital, where he is currently recuperating. Tom Daktari shared a photo from Kioko’s hospital bed, assuring fans that he was receiving care and that his condition was stabilising. The images and updates helped keep the public informed while underscoring the gravity of the attack.

The controversy has ignited a conversation about the treatment of artists and the role of local government in resolving financial disputes. Kioko had been demanding payment he claims he is owed, and the escalation into alleged physical assault has raised questions about accountability and professional conduct within county offices. Several celebrities joined the outcry online, pressing for justice and demanding that Machakos county government address the issue transparently. Their intervention has amplified calls for proper procedures and respect for citizens’ rights, particularly when disputes involve legal claims and public demonstrations.

This incident not only highlights challenges faced by Kenyan creatives but also reflects broader concerns about the handling of public funds and the treatment of those who seek their lawful dues. While Sammy Kioko recovers in hospital, the matter remains unresolved, and the county government has yet to provide a comprehensive response. The widespread condemnation from peers and the public signals a growing insistence on accountability and protection for artists advocating for their rights. Kioko’s ordeal underscores the need for safe, lawful avenues for dispute resolution and the importance of respecting human dignity in all interactions. As the situation develops, attention remains focused on ensuring that justice is served and that such incidents are prevented in the future.
