Businesswoman Dama Wa Spares has shared a recent setback in her company after a trusted employee stole goods worth KSh 90,000. During a radio interview, the CEO and founder recounted how she entrusted the employee with a parcel for delivery, only to discover that he never delivered it.
The employee had been recommended to Dama by her friend Muthoni Wa Kirumba, also known as Baby Top. Dama clarified that she does not blame Baby Top, noting that other hires she personally made have also let her down. “We trusted him because he had a good CV. We will continue hiring people and giving them jobs because, you know, these things happen in business,” she said.
Dama explained that the parcel, valued at KSh 90,000, was meant to be delivered via Easy Coach. The employee failed to drop it at the intended bus station and did not provide a receipt to confirm delivery. When the customer reported the issue, Dama asked for proof of delivery. The employee initially claimed he had delivered the parcel but did not get the receipt due to long queues.
CCTV footage from the bus company, however, showed that he never went to the bus station. When confronted, the employee lied, claiming he had been robbed and that his phone and the parcel were taken. Dama said he even reported the alleged robbery to the Githurai police, which raised further suspicion. Further CCTV evidence revealed he had used his phone that day, contradicting his story. Dama then took him to Central Police Station to recover the parcel and tell the truth.
Despite the setback, Dama emphasized that she remains committed to hiring and expanding her team. She encouraged diligence and accountability but said she would not let one incident discourage her from giving others opportunities.
In addition, Dama has previously considered relocating her business from Nairobi after the June 17 protests caused losses to several businesses. She highlighted the risks of operating in the city but remains determined to grow her company and continue serving her customers.
Dama Wa Spares also announced available positions in her company, signaling that she is actively recruiting and willing to trust new employees while implementing stronger safeguards to prevent theft.
