David Rudisha, the world record holder in the 800m, and Dr. Mercy Chepchumba held their engagement ceremony on January 18 at Sergoit Gardens in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, in a beautiful celebration of love and culture. The event, a traditional wedding known as koito, blended the Maasai and Kalenjin cultures, showcasing the couple’s roots.

Rudisha looked dashing in a navy Kaunda suit, accessorized with Maasai beads, while Chepchumba wore an elegant mauve gown. The ceremony was attended by close friends, family, and several prominent athletes, including World 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and Olympic champions Ezekiel Kemboi, Asbel Kiprop, and Janet Jepkosgei, among others.

The celebration continued with a lively after-party, where Kemboi, known for his charismatic presence, took to the dance floor, showing off his signature moves and getting the crowd cheering. His appearance sparked a wave of admiration from fans, with many commenting on his iconic dance style and calling him a legend.

The event was covered by renowned photographer Shem Kiptoo of Qip Photography, who shared that it was the first time he had captured an athlete’s wedding, calling it a unique experience. When asked about his wedding coverage rates, Kiptoo mentioned that traditional weddings start from KSh 70,000, while white weddings range from KSh 80,000 to KSh 250,000, depending on location and services provided.

The wedding has been a topic of celebration in Kenya, with many congratulating the couple on their engagement and wishing them a lifetime of happiness. Rudisha and Chepchumba’s love story is one for the books, and their union is another chapter in the incredible legacy of Kenyan athletes.
